Three suspects arrested after a smash-and-grab robbery at a Vacaville jewelry store Thursday may be the same robbers who held up a Newark mall shop in July, police said.
Just before 11 a.m., six suspects entered DeBartolo & Co. Fine Jewelers, in the 500 block of Main Street in Vacaville, armed with hammers and a handgun and used them to smash display cases to reach the loot, police said.
San Francisco residents Adrian Landers, 18, Derrick McCann, 18, and a 16-year-old male were subsequently arrested after a pursuit near American Canyon Road on Interstate 80, according to Vacaville police.
On Friday, police were continuing a search for three other suspects, Vacaville city spokesman Mark Mazzaferro said.
Meanwhile, Newark detectives were looking into whether the suspects were the same robbers who stormed Zena Jewelers International in a crowded shopping mall on July 26, smashed display cases with a pistol, grabbed jewelry and fired shots in the shop. Four suspects were involved in that incident.
No one was injured in the 12:15 p.m. armed robbery at the NewPark Mall business that left broken glass and shell casings littering the store's floor.
Both robberies took place on a Thursday during late morning and early afternoon hours.
"(There is) no estimate yet as to how much was stolen," Mazzaferro said in reference to the Vacaville heist. Police are checking for connections to similar crimes in the Bay Area, he
Vacaville police received numerous 911 calls reporting the incident after six suspects, dressed in dark clothing and carrying duffel bags and hammers, entered the business and began smashing the jewelry cases.
They stole jewelry and merchandise, and personal property from the owner, the lone employee inside the store, Sgt. Jeff King said. Witnesses said several suspects continued on foot, while the others are believed to have fled the scene in a black Dodge Magnum.
Witnesses from neighboring businesses gave police descriptions of the suspects, the getaway vehicle and its license plate number, King said. Vacaville officers spotted the car heading west on Interstate 80 near the North Texas exit in Fairfield and continued trailing the vehicle until enough units were in place to initiate a stop, King said.
Officers stopped the car and the three individuals inside were detained and an line up was conducted, King said.
Both Landers and McCann were booked into Solano County Jail where they each were being held on $35,000 bond Friday morning, booking records show. The 16-year-old was taken to juvenile hall.
The suspects in the Newark heist -- four men each armed with a gun -- ran to at least two waiting getaway cars and were last seen heading onto northbound Interstate 880 in a white Mercedes E-class and a black Acura or Lexus, police said.
Police have not released what type of jewelry was taken or its estimated value.
The store, which opened in 2010, carries rose gold jewelry, opal and custom jewelry and estate jewelry.
Police are asking anyone with information on either heist to contact Vacaville Police at 707-449-5200 or Newark Police at 510-578-4237.
