NEWARK -- A shoplifter attacked a TJ Maxx security guard over the weekend and made off with $100 worth of neckties, police said.

Officers were called just before 11 a.m. Saturday to 5500 Newpark Mall after a loss prevention officer at the store dialed 911 to report he'd been assaulted while trying to apprehend a man for shoplifting, Commander Mike Carroll said.

The security guard told police that the suspect hit him in the chest, knocked him to the ground and took off with $100 worth of ties.

The security guard was not seriously injured.

Police said the suspect is a white man, age 40-45, 6-feet-tall and weighs 220-230 pounds.
