NEWARK -- Two Hayward brothers were in jail Tuesday in connection with a shooting outside a popular bar, police said.
The suspects -- Troy Tristen Duran, 26, and Derek David Duran, 30 -- did not injure anyone during the Saturday morning incident outside Whiskeytown Saloon, said Newark Police Commander Mike Carroll.
Officers responded to a 12:46 a.m. call in which dispatchers could hear gunfire in the background as a caller reported the shooting at the bar in the 5600 block of Thorton Avenue, Carroll said.
Officers stopped a 1998 Ford Expedition they said was speeding away from the area with two men inside who matched a description of the suspects. Officers found a loaded 9 mm handgun in the car, Carroll said.
Expended 9 mm shell casings were also recovered at the scene, Carroll said.
Investigators said the shooting, which took place in the parking lot, stemmed from an argument between the men and other bar patrons of the bar.
Police say Troy Duran fired three to four rounds into the air during the dispute. None of the rounds struck anyone, police said.
Officers arrested Troy Duran on suspicion of negligent shooting at a building, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place and possession of a firearm in a vehicle. His brother was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to a crime.
Derek Duran was being held on $20,000 bail in Santa Rita Jail. His brother was being held on $330,000 bail.
The men are due in court to be arraigned this week.
