NEWARK -- A father-of-the-bride was forced to cut his daughter's wedding reception short over the weekend after police say a dozen gang members reportedly got into a brawl during the celebration.

Officers responded just after 9:50 p.m. Saturday to the Pavilion at 6430 Thorton Ave. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a fight involving 12 gang members, said Cmdr. Mike Carroll.

The first units on scene were greeted by about 100 drunken wedding reception attendees, Carroll said, so officers called for backup. The crowd was standing in a parking lot outside a small hall of the pavilion where the celebration took place.

The rest of Newark's officers on shift that evening responded, complete with lights and sirens to assist with crowd control, Carroll said.

Eventually the crowd began to disperse.

One person, Paul Greer Jr., 22, of San Lorenzo, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.

"The original report of a fight could not be established as folks were less than cooperative," Carroll said. "The father of the bride decided to end the reception and officers stood by while the guests left."

There were no reported injuries during the incident and Carroll confirmed that no gang members were identified at the wedding.
