MARTINEZ -- An intense fire that destroyed two cars and caused heavy damage to a gas station Wednesday evening was likely caused when a driver accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, police said.
No one was injured in the fire, which was reported around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Flex Oil gas station on Alhambra Avenue. Police did not identify the driver of the Chevrolet Cavalier that hit a pump, igniting the fire.
The gas station attendant quickly pressed the emergency shut-off button, stopping the flow of gas to the pumps. Firefighters from the Contra Costa Fire Protection District used flame retardant foam to extinguish the blaze about 15 minutes after they arrived on the scene.
An officer on the scene Wednesday evening said that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash. Martinez police are still investigating the crash.
