OAKLEY -- Residents here are invited to rid their homes of unwanted prescription drugs this month by handing them over to local law enforcement.
Officers will collect medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at Oakley Police Department, 3231 Main St.
This second event of the year for the city is part of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration's efforts to curb the theft and abuse of prescription medications which -- if expired -- also could be dangerous.
Accidental poisonings are another facet of the public health problem these controlled substances create.
Oakley residents responded to the DEA's "Drug Take-Back Day" in April by turning in 106 pounds of pharmaceuticals; nationally, authorities took 276 tons out of circulation.
