Playing its first Mission Valley Athletic League game in 20 years, the Moreau Catholic High football team got a huge defensive stand on a fourth-and-4 with 1:43 left in the fourth quarter to preserve a 19-18 win over Kennedy-Fremont at Tak Fudenna Stadium on Saturday.

It was the Mariners' first MVAL win since 1992 when they beat Irvington 35-7 in the sixth week of that season.

"I have a lot of respect for the MVAL and we feel this is a great home for us to come in and play," Moreau Catholic coach Andrew Cotter said.

The defensive stand by the Mariners (3-2, 1-0 MVAL) gave them the ball back and brought a jovial Moreau crowd to their feet.

Moreau Catholic's D.J. Souto rushed for 160 yards on 24 carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run that gave the Mariners a 13-12 lead with 8:42 left in the second quarter.

Kennedy (1-3, 0-1) took an 18-13 lead on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Justin Staley to Jacob Murrietta with 14 seconds left in the third quarter. Staley was 12 of 17 with 209 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Moreau Catholic sophomore Jason Hinton gave the Mariners the lead for good with a 2-yard touchdown run that capped a methodical 15-play, 62-yard drive with 5:37 left in the game.
