HAYWARD -- Police on Thursday released the identity of a homeless man found slain earlier this month.
William Davis, 48, of Hayward, was killed Sept. 16 after at least one person attacked him in the 24600 block of Whitman Street, Lt. Roger Keener said.
Police were called to the street around 5 a.m. by a report of an injured man. The man, later identified as Davis, had been bludgeoned to death. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy determined he died of head trauma.
Keener said Davis, who recently came back to Hayward from Southern California, did not have any known family in the area. He was a transient looking for a place to stay when he was attacked, Keener said.
As of Thursday no arrests had been made and no motive was known.
"There is thus far little to go on," Keener said. "Help from the community who may know something of the incident or of Davis would be helpful."
