BAY POINT -- Valerie Hartzell had to strike out before she could "Strike It Rich."
Hartzell's losing California Lottery ticket turned out to be a winner of sorts after she entered a second-chance program. Her "prize" was 80 Strike It Rich Scratchers tickets, one of which won her a $250,000 jackpot.
"I scratched it, then I had to keep looking at it ... back and forth. Is this right?" she said, according to a California Lottery news release. "My hands were shaking like a leaf."
The lottery's second-chance program is typically a drawing for a cash award, but a special summer program added the Scratchers tickets as a prize.
Hartzell said she was excited to buy new cars for herself and her husband.
