HAYWARD -- Burglars ransacked First United Methodist Church of Hayward over the weekend, taking little of value but damaging doors, windows and cabinets.
Tools were stolen from the custodian's closet and a small amount from the church office, said parishioner Gregg Schluntz. More tools were taken from the Boy Scout Troop 801 cabinets in the basement, where everything was dumped on the floor.
"It was probably drug addicts looking for something they could pawn to get some drugs," Schluntz said. He estimated repairs will cost less than $1,000, with church members donating the labor.
The break-in at the church at 1183 B St. was discovered Saturday morning. "This is a sad thing for Hayward," Schluntz said.
