RICHMOND -- A fire did major damage to a vacant home Sunday afternoon and was very likely caused by homeless squatters, authorities said.

No one was injured.

The fire was reported at 4:44 p.m. in the 400 block of A Street, according to Richmond fire Battalion Chief Merlin Turner. Firefighters arriving found the back of the house and the roof fully engulfed in flames, he said.

The blaze was under control within about 30 minutes, Turner said. Four engines, a truck and two battalion chiefs responded to the fire.

Turner said firefighters found the house littered with bottles and other debris, and said it was very likely that squatters had broken into the house. The fire department called Richmond code enforcement to board up the windows and doors, he said.
