HAYWARD -- A Hayward family is sponsoring a healthy heart fair Saturday in honor of Pauliasi Langi, a 14-year-old who died in March after he collapsed during a P.E. class at Cesar Chavez Middle School.
"We're doing this to reach out and teach the community to eat healthy and exercise and to stay fit," said Kafoatu Anitoni, one of Pauliasi's older sisters.
Pauliasi died of heart failure, according to the Alameda County Coroner's Office and his family.
At the event, called the Pauliasi Langi Healthy Heart Luau, there will be musical performances, Pacific Island dancing and Zumba exercises. Hayward police officers and firefighters will talk about emergency first-aid and lifesaving techniques. Nutritionists and American Heart Association volunteers will provide information about staying healthy.
Trophies will be handed out to winners of flag football and basketball tournaments, which are being held to encourage kids to be active. Obstacle courses and bounce houses also are planned, and there will be healthy food samples.
The fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the school, 27845 Whitman St.
