UNION CITY -- The community is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to celebrate the completion of Station Center, a mixed-use section of Union City's Intermodal BART Station District project.
Residents can join city leaders and developers for the event scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 34888 11th St., Union City spokeswoman Rhea Serran said.
Officials envision the BART station district as a transit hub that will be a gateway to Silicon Valley, as well as offering housing and entertainment options, Serran said.
The Station Center includes the East Plaza, which features a fountain sculpture titled, "The Dancers," by French artist Louis Derbre. Next to that is a promenade and playground that includes a 35-foot-high pyramid.
In addition, a housing complex featuring 157 residences, a computer lab, children's play area, fitness center and community garden has been constructed next to the BART station.
Serran said the complex -- developed by MidPen Housing Corp., a Foster City-based company specializing in affordable housing for low-income families and seniors -- is LEED Platinum, the highest designation for sustainable construction.
