CONCORD -- Two men trying to ransack a man's home were caught in the act by the home's resident but escaped capture Tuesday, police said.

The daytime burglary in the 2300 block of Hess Road in unincorporated Concord resulted in a heavy police presence and a solo vehicle accident but nobody was injured, Contra Costa Sheriff's Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Nobody was arrested, Lee said. Police earlier said a man was detained but that report was erroneous.

The two men fled in separate vehicles after the resident returned home around 3:43 p.m. to find two men in the backyard of the home clearing out property, Lee said.

One of the vehicles, a Honda Accord, crashed, but the driver exited and ran from police. The other vehicle never was located, Lee said.
