HAYWARD -- With most votes counted, newcomers Annette Walker and John Taylor and incumbent Luis Reynoso appeared headed for victory in the Hayward school board election.

Walker had 21 percent of the vote, Taylor 18 percent and Reynoso 15 percent. Challenger Sara Lamnin was in fourth with 12.75 percent, followed closely by Heather Reyes with 12.7 percent. Wandra Williams had 11 percent and Peter Bufete 10 percent.

This is the second time Walker has sought election to the Hayward school board. The head of admissions at Cal State East Bay narrowly lost to Jesus Armas in 2010.

Taylor is a forensics science and criminal justice instructor at Eden Area Regional Occupation Center.

Reynoso, an instructor at a private university, was first elected to the school board in 2008. His tenure has been marked by frequent clashes with other board members.

Lamnin is program director at Hayward Community Action Network. She has been a Hayward planning commissioner since 2010 and previously served on the city's citizens advisory committee. She ran unsuccessfully for the Hayward City Council in 2008.

In her campaign, Reyes, a legal administrator, emphasized her firsthand knowledge of Hayward schools from a parent's perspective. Her two children are enrolled in a Hayward school. Williams also identified herself as a concerned parent who has a child attending a district school.

Bufete, who teaches first-aid and CPR classes, ran unsuccessfully for Hayward City Council in June. He serves on the city Library Commission and is a member of Hayward Education Foundation board of directors.
