Barbieri led the pack with 26 percent of the votes, followed by Loss with 19.9 percent and Banther with 19.5 percent. Incumbent Kunio Okui trailed with 18.5 percent, and newcomer Mary Pippitt had 16 percent.

Barbieri, a retired businessman, and Okui, an accountant, were running for their sixth four-year terms on the board, and Loss for her fifth.

Banther is president of the New Haven Teachers Association and a teacher at Logan High School in Union City, and Pippitt has more than 30 years of experience as an educator. Both were endorsed by the Castro Valley Teachers Association, as was Barbieri.
