Ariel Winter, the 14-year-old actress who plays Alex Dunphy on "Modern Family," has been removed from her home by a judge after hearing allegations of physical and emotional abuse by her mother, according to TMZ.

Court sources allegedly said, after an Oct. 3 hearing, a judge determined the allegations that Ariel was being physically and emotionally abused by her mother Crystal Workman were serious enough to place the actress in a temporary guardianship with her older sister Shanelle Workman. Crystal Workman was ordered to stay 100 yards away from Ariel.

TMZ also reported that nearly two decades ago, the Department of Children and Family Services also removed Shanelle from Crystal's home based on similar allegations. Law enforcement sources allegedly said Shanelle was in foster care for more than two years and never went back to her mother.

TMZ says there is a false report circulating that Ariel is seeking legal emancipation from her mom so she can be with her boyfriend. The judge set another hearing for Nov. 20.
