San Rafael police released a composite sketch Thursday of an armed prowler who entered the apartment of four college women and fled after a bloody struggle.
The incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on Playa del Rey in the Canal area, where four Dominican University students share a residence. Police said two of the women were watching a movie in an upstairs room, and the other women were not home.
The burglary entered the room with a knife and "terrorized" the two women, ages 18 and 19, said police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher. One of the women fought with the intruder while the other called 911, and the struggle continued down the stairs, through the home and out into the yard and carport.
The man suffered numerous stab wounds or cuts during the struggle, and he broke free and escaped just before police arrived. Investigators suspect he might have sought medical care for his wounds.
The woman who fought him off was treated for minor injuries.
Police planned to return to the neighborhood Friday to distribute bilingual fliers with the new sketch, which is based on descriptions from the victims.
"We consider this to be a very violent and dangerous person," Rohrbacher said. "We really want to identify and locate this guy."
The burglar was distinguished by prominent ears and skin irregularities on his face, police said. He was described as Hispanic, 19 to 25 years old, thin and about 5-foot-6, with dark skin and high cheekbones.
