FREMONT -- The California School for the Deaf football team's season came to an end as Patrick Garcia caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Sheppard with 1:05 left to lift visiting St. Vincent to a 13-12 victory in the North Coast Section Division V semifinals on Saturday.
Garcia's touchdown capped an eight-play, 30-yard drive that was set up by Zach Smith's blocked punt by with 3:39 remaining.
With the victory, the third-seeded Mustangs (10-2) advance to play No. 1 Ferndale in the championship next Saturday at Humboldt State.
The No. 2 Eagles finished their season at 10-2 -- a school record for most wins in a season.
Eagles senior running back Brian Freeman ran for 267 yards on 35 carries. But CSD was done in by six turnovers, including three lost fumbles.
In the second half, the Mustangs twice moved inside the Eagles' 20. But the CSD defense held its ground, as Carlos Lopez had an interception and St. Vincent turned the ball over on downs.
Freeman got the Eagles on the board in the first quarter with a 52-yard scamper down the sideline. After Derek Murphy tied the score at 6-6 on a 1-yard plunge for the Mustangs, Freeman put the Eagles back on top late in the first half.
He took the handoff, shook off three tackles before exploding up the middle for a 42-yard touchdown to give CSD a 12-6 lead after a failed 2-point conversion with 39 seconds left in the half. Sheppard threw for 193 yards for the Mustangs.
