San Jose State won't be losing football coach Mike MacIntyre to the University of Kentucky.

After days of MacIntyre's name being rumored as a candidate for its vacancy, Kentucky hired Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops on Tuesday.

MacIntyre had been reported to be a candidate for the job in the weeks since the Wildcats fired coach Joker Phillips. But the third-year San Jose State coach said Monday that he had not been in contact with Kentucky.

Stoops had also been one of the hot names in the rumor mill for Phillips' replacement. KentuckySportsRadio.com first reported that Stoops had been hired Tuesday and the school later issued a press release.

"I am thrilled to be named the head football coach at the University of Kentucky," Stoops said in the release. "My family and I are excited and looking forward to becoming a part of the Big Blue Nation."

MacIntyre's name will likely still be mentioned in connection with other coaching openings, including Cal. As of Monday, MacIntyre said he hadn't been contacted about any jobs. He planned to go on a recruiting trip Tuesday with the team scheduled to resume practice Wednesday as they await word about a bowl invitation.
