HERCULES -- Stuff-a-Bus, WestCAT's holiday food drive on wheels, will make its customary annual stop in Hercules next month, but with a new twist.

In addition to nonperishable food items, Stuff-a-Bus will collect new socks and new or gently used coats this year.

The coats and socks will be distributed to needy families in the WestCAT service area and at Mission Solano, which has worked closely for years with WestCAT's transportation contractor, MV Transportation, said WestCAT marketing coordinator Yvonne Morrow.

The food will go to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. WestCAT also will accept cash donations or checks payable to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. WestCAT will provide the food bank's federal tax identification number to donors who need it for their records.

A WestCAT bus festooned in holiday decorations with Santa and his helpers on hand will park at Lucky supermarket, 1590 Sycamore Ave., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 14. Donations also will be accepted at the WestCAT office at 601 Walter Ave. in Pinole from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays in December through Dec. 19.

Stuff-a-Bus hopes to top last year's take of 424 pounds of food, not to mention supplementing it with socks and coats, Morrow said. Donated food items should be nonperishable; examples are canned meat and fish, iron-rich cereal, canned fruit, 100 percent fruit juice, dry beans, enriched rice, canned vegetables and tomato products, powdered milk and canned, ready-to-eat meals.

Morrow invites people who know a needy family or individual in the WestCAT service area to call her or Mica at 510-724-3331 or email WestCAT at info@westcat.org to ensure the needy folks are included on WestCAT's holiday donation list.

WestCAT operates local buses in northwestern Contra Costa County; express buses between Martinez and El Cerrito Del Norte BART; BART Express buses between Hercules, Pinole, Richmond's Hilltop area and El Cerrito Del Norte BART; and "Lynx" express buses between Rodeo-Hercules and San Francisco's Transbay Terminal.
