SAN LEANDRO -- A freeway overpass and onramps to Interstate 880 remained closed Wednesday evening after junked cars fell off a big-rig car carrier and into oncoming traffic, where they were struck by several vehicles.

The big-rig carrying crushed cars was traveling northbound about 2:30 p.m. when the load struck the underside of an overpass at Marina Boulevard.

Two of the crushed cars tumbled into oncoming traffic, hitting one car and sending its driver to the hospital with minor injuries.

With debris scattered across the road, CHP shut the eastbound off-ramp at Marina Boulevard and the southbound off-ramp for I-880. Officers also shut the freeway overpass, according to CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt.

Caltrans investigators were expected to arrive around 7 p.m. to assess the overpass and investigate the crash.

Van Eckhardt said when investigators arrive, drivers can expect delays because sections of the freeway will be shut down for the inspection.

CHP is not releasing the name of the car carrier company involved in the accident, and no arrests have been made and no citations have been issued.
