"There are thousands of nameless, faceless attorneys who fill the top floors of many of the office buildings in every major city in the United States -- there is no one like Tony Buzbee. Buzbee is a leader in his field, and is at the top of his game."

Modesty is not Buzbee's game. The description above, lifted from his bio page on his website, www.justwin.com, is typical of the tenor of most of his promotional materials.

Buzbee, 44, is a former Marine who now works as a trial lawyer and managing partner of the Buzbee Law Firm in Houston, Texas. The firm also has offices in Galveston, Texas, and Edinburg, Texas.

But the boldness and track record -- Buzbee has won hundreds of millions for clients against oil companies and other corporations -- is just what Oakland-based attorney John L. Burris was looking for when he tapped Buzbee to join him in suing Chevron over an Aug. 6 fire at its Richmond refinery.

Some of Buzbee's greatest hits:

2010: Buzbee's clients were part of a $190 million settlement involving about 2,400 property owner claims against the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association related to Hurricane Ike, which struck the Texas coast in 2008.

2009: A jury in Galveston awarded $100 million to 10 Buzbee clients who alleged toxic exposure related to a discharge at the BP Texas City plant.

2007: Buzbee filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of thousands of Gulf Coast citizens who resided in allegedly toxic housing units distributed after the landfalls of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 2005 against the federal government and dozens of trailer manufacturers in New Orleans. The case ultimately settled for about $50 million.

2005: Buzbee won the first verdict in Texas against Ford Motor Co. related to the stability of the Ford Explorer on behalf of the family of a 13-year-old boy who died in a rollover accident. The verdict was $16.6 million.

According to Buzbee, his firm has collected more than $500 million from BP as a result of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the BP Texas City explosion and various other incidents.
