SAN LEANDRO -- Police found a teen hiding in a trash can outside a city business Monday after he allegedly ripped a gold necklace from a woman's neck.

Officers responded about noon to 15500 East 14th St., just south of Fairmont Drive, for a report of a strong-arm robbery, said Lt. Randy Brandt.

Two female victims told police they were walking through a parking lot of a business when a teenage boy rode his bicycle up to them, ripped a gold chain necklace from one of their necks then fled north through the parking lot.

Following a 911 call, a dispatcher provided the details to responding police, Brandt said.

The suspect, Brandt said, was found hiding inside a gray, plastic garbage can outside another business located several blocks away at 14511 East 14th St.

The suspect, a 16-year-old from Redwood City, was arrested on suspicion of robbery.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police at 510-577-3238 or contact the Anonymous Tip Line at 510-577-3278. Residents can also send an anonymous tip by texting the word SLPD and their tip to 847411.
