NEWARK -- A female shoplifter who tried to attack a department store loss prevention officer with pliers was arrested Tuesday, police said.

Officers were called just before 8 p.m. to Macy's at 200 Newpark Mall Road for a report of a shoplifter, Cmdr. Mike Carroll said.

When police arrived they learned that the suspect -- later identified as Brianna Robertson, 30, of Oakland -- attempted to attack a loss prevention officer with a pair of pliers after he caught her stealing wallets from the store, Carroll said.

Carroll did not know where the pliers came from, but said it is possible Robertson brought them with her into the store as many thieves carry them to remove security sensors.

She was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting and booked into the Santa Rita Jail.

The jail website lists Robertson's occupation as a secretary. It also states she was being held on $100,000 bail Wednesday and due in court to be arraigned on the charge at the Fremont Hall of Justice on Thursday afternoon.
