RICHMOND -- A body found Sunday morning in the water at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline is that of a man missing since Dec. 8, authorities said.
An autopsy on the body of 77-year-old Philip Mattingly of Fair Oaks revealed that he drowned in the waters off Mare Island, Contra Costa Sheriff's Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said. Mattingly's body was found at 11:20 a.m. Sunday in the northwest corner of the park, according to East Bay Regional Park police Lt. Jon King.
Mattingly was on his tugboat at a Mare Island dock when a family member last saw him around 5 p.m. on Dec. 8. When Mattingly didn't come home, a family member returned to the boat and found the boat unlocked and the car still in the parking lot.
It is not known how Mattingly ended up in the water.
