OAKLAND -- A husband and wife who were hit by a car Monday night while crossing a street near Lake Merritt remained hospitalized Tuesday with the woman in grave condition, police said.

The 27-year-old woman and her 26-year-old husband, who live in the area, were crossing Grand Avenue at Bellevue Avenue in a crosswalk about 6:40 p.m. when they were hit by a car going westbound on Grand, police said.

The driver of the car remained at the scene and cooperated with police, investigators said. Police said the driver, a woman, told officers she did not see the couple. She was released pending further investigation.

Police did not release any names and said they don't know yet where the couple was headed during their walk.

The wife was in grave condition at a hospital and her husband in serious condition.

Grand Avenue was shut down for awhile as police conducted their investigation.

Police would like anyone who witnessed the incident to call traffic investigators at 510-777-8720.
