Torrance attorney Gavin Hachiya Wasserman was appointed Friday to the California Fair Political Practices Commission by State Controller John Chiang.
Wasserman, 39, a 2008 City Council candidate, was president of the Japanese American Republicans and has long been active in GOP circles.
The five-member commission, which must hire a permanent executive director of the agency, is unusual in that it is expressly intended to be a bipartisan panel.
In this case Chiang, who is from Torrance, was required to choose a commissioner from a list of applicants submitted by the state Republican Party.
"I do have a reputation for being able to work with folks of differing views who can come together on common ground," Wasserman said. "I just plan to work hard and do a good job."
His term will run through Jan. 31, 2017.
