Premier Medical Transportation has launched the "Driving Away Hunger Campaign," which donates one meal to Riverside-based Second Harvest Food Bank for each transport call the company receives.
The company has donated roughly 9,400 meals since the program's launch last November. Premier wants to provide 40,000 meals by November this year.
Bo Myrell, the company's chief operating officer, said the campaign was inspired by the staggering hunger statistics he saw in the Inland Empire.
"I was astonished," Myrell said by phone. "We do have a hunger crisis and not many people know about it."
The Inland Empire consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for food hardship, which is defined as not having enough money to buy adequate food.
Premier has about 60 emergency and non-emergency vehicles in its fleet. Myrell said the local campaign to help end hunger is a great way to raise awareness about the issue.
"We're always looking for ways to tie in what we're doing to our community," he said. "And it's a big deal to get the rest of our community and clients (involved)."
The company also donates a meal for every "like" it receives on its Facebook page.
