Man jumped to death from Point Fermin cliff

A 61-year-old man jumped to his death Tuesday morning from a San Pedro cliff, police said.

Authorities identified the man as Juan Ignacio De La Cruz of San Pedro.

Witnesses saw the man at Point Fermin Park in the 800 block of Paseo del Mar shortly before 10 a.m. and tried to talk him out of jumping, but he leaped before police and firefighters arrived, Los Angeles police Sgt. Jeff Hamilton said.

Firefighters responded from land, sea and air, city fire spokeswoman Katherine Main said.

Rescuers planned to lift the body to the top of the cliff for the Coroner's office to investigate.
