More than 50 flights from Los Angeles International Airport, most bound for the East Coast, were canceled by airlines responding to a fierce winter storm, according to the website, Flightaware.com.

In all, as of Friday afternoon, airlines had canceled more than 3,000 flights, the website reported. The bulk of the flights either terminated or originated in Newark, New Jersey, New York, Boston and Toronto. Airlines were also moving on Friday to cancel many of their flights for the weekend. Passengers were encouraged by airlines to rebook their tickets without financial penalty.

Beginning Friday, forecasters predicted 2 feet or more of snow in many areas of New York, New Jersey and New England.
