VENICE - A suspected reckless driver was hospitalized and in custody today after injuring a cyclist, then crashing a pickup truck into a Venice restaurant, injuring another four people, while being pursued by Los Angeles police officers, police said.
The pursuit started at Speedway and 20th Street at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, went northbound on Lincoln Boulevard and ended "a couple of minutes" later at Lincoln and Vernon Avenue, said Lt. Marco Munoz of the Los Angeles Police Department Pacific's Station.
A couple of lights before Vernon, the fugitive driver struck a cyclist, who suffered a broken leg and scrapes, then plowed into a restaurant, he said.
"Four to five people in the restaurant complained of pain," Munoz said, adding that they were transported to hospitals for evaluation and treatment, along with the suspect, who had "a bruise in his eye area and said he could not move."
Lincoln Boulevard was closed overnight between Vernon and California Avenues while an investigation was conducted but was reopened after daybreak, police said.
Once released from the hospital, the suspect will be booked on suspicion of felony hit and run and felony evading, the lieutenant said.
The restaurant was shut down after sustaining structural damage when the truck crashed through the glass and panel wall, he said. The restaurant, Wurstkuche, is at 625 Lincoln Blvd.
