A bicyclist was hospitalized Friday morning after a collision with a vehicle on Catalina Avenue in Redondo Beach, police said.

The accident happened just before 8 a.m. as the cyclist, who was traveling north on Catalina, collided with a vehicle making a left turn from southbound Catalina onto eastbound Carnelian Street, Redondo Beach police Sgt. Dave Christian said.

"He ran into the side of the car," Christian said. "He had some pretty severe injuries."

In addition to broken bones, Christian said the cyclist may have sustained head injuries. The man, believed to be in his mid-40s, was taken to County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, he said.

He did not believe that the driver involved was injured.

Police were continuing to investigate the accident. Officers blocked the intersection and a stretch of Catalina Avenue near Diamond Street for a few hours afterward.
