Groundbreaking will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday to mark the start of construction of a skate plaza at San Pedro's Peck Park.
The event includes free food, live music and a demonstration.
The $800,000 project - to be built in the west end of the park between the picnic area and Western Avenue - was strongly backed by the Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Council, which worked with the Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department.
The 7,600-square-foot outdoor facility was planned with input from the San Pedro Skatepark Association, which worked with city architects in drawing up the plans.
Peck Park is at 560 N. Western Ave. in San Pedro.
