A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday morning when he struck a stopped sport utility vehicle that had inched out to check for traffic at Cabrillo Avenue and Summerland Street in San Pedro.

"It was just a very unfortunate accident," said Los Angeles police Detective Carol Mitchell of the South Traffic Bureau.

The driver of the SUV, Ramon Nevarez of San Pedro, remained at the scene and will not be cited, Mitchell said.

The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. when the motorcyclist was traveling east on Summerland.

The SUV was stopped at a stop sign and heading north on Cabrillo.

A neighbor said the intersection is known for its near misses.

The victim, believed to be in his 50s, was taken to a hospital where he died, Mitchell said. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
