SAN BERNARDINO - Police are investigating the eighth homicide of the year after a man was shot multiple times in the upper torso Monday evening.
Semaj Jamesz Lavender, 18 of San Bernardino, was a passenger in a car that pulled up to the gate of an apartment complex in the 2900 block of Loma Avenue just south of Lynwood Avenue when shots rang out striking him, police said.
The driver of the car, whose name has not been released, drove Lavender to St. Bernardine Medical Center at 2101 N. Waterman Ave. where he
Police don't yet know whether it was gang or drug related, although police on the scene said the neighborhood has gang ties.
The police gang detail, San Bernardino Movement Against Street Hoodlums (SMASH), was on the scene early in the investigation assisting patrol officers.
This is the third homicide in March.
There were 46 homicides recorded in the city during 2012, according to police.
Police don't know the motive and haven't identified any suspects.
