MARTINEZ -- Nearly 4,800 people have applied for 180 new health exchange call center agent positions at the newly approved call center facility in Concord, the county reported Thursday.

As of Thursday morning, the county had received 4,725 applications. Applications will be accepted through Friday at 5 p.m.

People interested in applying can contact the Contra Costa County Human Resources Department at 925-335-1700 or apply online at www.cccounty.us/hr, click on the "Job Opportunities" link, and select exchange customer service agent I or II.

The agents will help eligible state residents enroll in health care insurance under the federal Affordable Care Act, which goes into effect Jan. 1.

Agents must have a valid driver's license and a high school diploma or equivalency and experience requirements vary depending on the position.

The center, which will be located at 2500 Bates Ave. in Concord, will operate Monday through Saturday and take calls 59 hours a week. During open enrollment, the center will operate 72 hours a week. The county has a contract to operate the call center for at least three years.

Annual salary ranges from $31,877 to $45,040, depending on experience.
