Mayor Opanyi Nasiali and Councilman Sam Pedroza confirmed Lyons' injuries on Tuesday and said he would be heading home in the afternoon.
Nasiali said Lyons was working in his garage when the injury happened.
Doctors had managed to reattach Lyons thumb and were massaging it so it stays and "the latest is it's going to attach. But his index finger was completely severed off," Nasiali said.
Pedroza added that "we're happy he's doing well and looking forward to having him back on council. He's the chair of the Housing and Economic Development Committee at the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments. We'll be getting him back at that position as well. "
After the injury, Lyons was later airlifted to Los Angeles County - USC Medical Center and underwent nine hours of surgery that caused him to miss the April 23 council meeting.
Lyons was elected to the council in March 2011, when he was age 65. His term expires in March 2015 and, according to the city of Claremont website, he has lives in Claremont with his life partner Sharyn Webb since 2002.
Since the injury, Lyons has not been receiving visitors and his family requested flowers not be sent to the hospital.
A call placed at Lyons' residence on Tuesday was not immediately returned.
