CULVER CITY -- With a little bit of luck and a lot of quick thinking, 19-year-old Hannah Shoenhard guaranteed herself at least $10,000 and a spot in the semifinals of the 25th "Jeopardy!" College Championships.

Shoenhard, a junior at Scripps College in Claremont, competed in Monday night's quarterfinal match against Jed Silver, a senior from Tufts University, and Julia Sprangers, a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Monday's show was the first of five pre-taped quarterfinal matches that will air this week, with the semifinal matches airing next week before the two-day championship shows on May 16-17.

After a few missteps in the first questions left her $400 in the hole, Shoenhard rallied back to take the lead by the first commercial break and kept the lead for most of the game.

"I thought I would do better on the Rocks and Minerals category," Shoenhard said. "My father is a petroleum engineer so he's really into geology and whenever my family goes hiking, my dad says something like, 'this rock is schist' or whatever, so I know a lot of random rock names. "

For the Final Jeopardy question, the category was State Quarters and with a nearly $4,000 lead, Shoenhard felt confident enough to make a big wager.

"My family collects the state quarters so we have one of those board things where you stick them all in and I took a class where we covered the Hawaiian monarchy last semester," Shoenhard said. "So I was really lucky for Final Jeopardy in that I remembered the Hawaii state quarter has Kamehameha on it. "

Shoenhard earned an automatic spot as a semifinalist and her next episode will air Monday.

The two runners-up win $10,000 and the winner of the semifinal match goes on to compete in the two-day final for a chance at $100,000.

"I was really nervous right before the rehearsals started but once I got up to the podium I got really focused on the game," she said.

"All of these people are doing really well, especially in the rehearsals, so I've definitely got some pretty stiff competition but right now I'm having a lot of fun. "
