SAN JOSE -- San Jose State received eight votes in the USA Today Coaches preseason poll that was released on Thursday morning.

The eight votes places the Spartans in a tie for No. 40 in the poll that's voted on by 62 coaches across the nation. SJSU coach Ron Caragher, Stanford coach David Shaw and Cal coach Sonny Dykes are not among the voters. It's believed to possibly be the first time the Spartans have received votes in a preseason poll.

San Jose State received the fourth-most votes among Mountain West Conference teams. Boise State was the only MW team to crack the poll, coming in at No. 19.

West Division favorite Fresno State was 31st with 62 votes and Utah State was 35th with 23 votes.

Alabama is the preseason No. 1. Stanford, which opens its season Sept. 7 against SJSU, is No. 4.

The Spartans begin fall training camp Thursday, exactly four weeks ahead of their season opener Aug. 29 against Sacramento State.
