Oakland's Grace Na is six strokes off the lead after an opening-round 75 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championship in Charleston, S.C.

Livermore's Casie Cathrea, the low amateur at the 2013 U.S. Women's Open, had seven bogeys and one birdie en route to a 77. Allisen Corpuz, 15, of Honolulu shot a 2-under 69 to open a two-stroke lead at the Country Club of Charleston.

The event consists of 36 holes of stroke play followed by six rounds of match play, with the championship scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final Sunday.

College

The Stanford women's basketball team will face at least four NCAA tournament teams from a season ago, including defending champion Connecticut, as the Cardinal announced its 12-game 2013-14 nonconference schedule.

The Cardinal opens on the road Saturday, Nov. 9, at Boston College before facing Connecticut at the XL Center in Hartford on Monday, Nov. 11. Other 2013 NCAA tournament teams on the nonconference schedule are Tennessee, Gonzaga and Cal Poly.

The slate also includes trips to Texas and Fresno State as well as a trip to Puerto Vallarta for the 2013 Hardwood Tournament of Hope. The Cardinal's full schedule, which will include TV broadcast information and a finalized Pac-12 slate, is expected to be announced in early September.

  • Saint Mary's rowing coach Nicole Younts resigned to devote more time to her family, athletic director Mark Orr announced. During Younts' six years at Saint Mary's, five were as head coach. The Gaels finished in the top four in the West Coast Conference each season.
