FREMONT -- Police are looking for new members for its Volunteers in Police Services Program.
The program, known as V.I.P.S., was formed in 2006 to strengthen Fremont police's relationship with the community. It currently has 75 members, but officials hope to add another 25 recruits soon, police said.
Volunteers' myriad duties include conducting vacation home security checks, distributing crime alert bulletins and enforcing handicapped parking violations.
Program applicants will be subject to a background investigation and undergo 60 hours of training over a two-month period. Proposed volunteers have until Sept. 1 to apply.
