BURLINGAME -- Two men in their mid-30s were killed and a third person hospitalized when the SUV they were in careened through a guard rail and plunged down a steep embankment off Interstate 280 near the Trousdale Drive offramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported around 5:20 p.m. Monday, and responding officers found an overturned white SUV with two unconscious people trapped inside. The roof appeared to be collapsed in parts, according to the CHP.

The driver and a passenger were pronounced dead at the scene by responding fire personnel, said CHP spokesman Moises Escoto. The third person was transported to Stanford Hospital with injuries that appeared minor, Escoto said.

He said they did not immediately know what caused the driver to lose control and crash off the roadway. No other vehicles were involved. Escoto said the section of roadway where it happened has a "pretty steep" drop of about 10 to 15 feet.

The San Mateo County coroner was summoned to the scene shortly before 6 p.m.

All lanes of the roadway were cleared and a traffic advisory lifted around 7:30 p.m.
