DANVILLE -- A 16-year-old boy died and two other teens were hurt in an accident Monday evening after a car drove off the roadway and crashed into a tree, authorities said.
The boy's name is being withheld until the coroner can notify his family.
The crash was reported about 8:50 p.m. in the area of Claridge Drive and El Capitan Drive in Danville, where crews arrived within ten minutes to extricate three people from the vehicle, Chief Steve Simpkins said. At least one person was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.
Emergency crews transported one of the passengers to San Ramon Regional Medical Center, where he died, police said.
The driver of the vehicle and the other passenger were taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, police said. The 17-year-old driver of the vehicle sustained broken ribs and the other 16-year-old passenger sustained a broken leg. Both are in stable condition this morning, Dickerson said.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Police said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the collision.
