ALAMEDA -- A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a female student Friday in a bathroom at Ruby Bridges Elementary School, police said.

According to Lt. Lance Leibnitz, officers were called to the school, located at 351 Jack London Avenue around 3:50 p.m. for reports of an assault in an unspecified bathroom. Officers were told the teen was seen running from a restroom and he was found and apprehended a short distance away, Leibnitz said.

Police did not say who reported the incident. The school was not in session at the time.

Leibnitz would also not say how young the student was, only that she was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland where she was evaluated.

Police believe the alleged assault was an isolated incident and that the two are not acquainted with one another.

The teen has not been identified because of his age, but he is a student at another school in the Alameda School District, Leibnitz added.

"This whole situation is tragic," Leibnitz said. "But on a positive note, we have a suspect and he is in custody."
