OAKLAND -- A 2-year-old boy was struck and killed in an abandoned parking lot near the Oakland waterfront Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The boy, who was not immediately identified, was playing in the parking lot around 4:15 p.m. while his mother sold fruit from the back of her truck, said Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson.

A pickup truck pulled slowly into the parking lot, which is abandoned but not cordoned off from public access, and accidentally struck the boy, Watson said.

"At this time, it appears it was purely an unfortunate accident," Watson said.

About a dozen family members gathered near the lot but declined to comment.

The driver of the pickup truck that struck the boy stopped and cooperated with police and has not been arrested. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident, police said. His name was not released.

Watson did not know why the driver had entered the parking lot, but said he was driving slowly.

The parking lot sits next to an abandoned furniture warehouse at 845 Embarcadero that was damaged in a fire about a month ago, Watson said.

Police originally said the boy was 3 years old, but the Alameda County Coroner's office later confirmed his age as 2. His name was not released.
