FREMONT -- A Newark man has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of committing a sex crime on an adult patient who lives at a Fremont nursing facility, authorities said.

Bruce Michael Goulart, 57, was charged with 17 felony counts of committing a lewd act on a dependent adult while being a caretaker, according to court documents.

Goulart is accused of committing the crime each week between April 1 and Aug. 23, court documents said.

The patient is an elderly man who lives at the Crestwood Treatment Center, said Geneva Bosques, a Fremont police spokeswoman.

Authorities are not releasing the patient's name, and court documents refer to him as "John Doe 1."

A Crestwood Treatment Center representative referred all phone calls to the facility's corporate office in Sacramento. A phone message left Friday at that office was not returned.

The Fremont center, situated in the 2100 block of Mowry Avenue, is affiliated with Crestwood Behavioral Health, Inc., a privately held mental health services company.

Crestwood's website describes the treatment center in Fremont as "a skilled-nursing facility that provides long-term care to individuals diagnosed with an organic brain disease. Residents ... typically have a combination of psychiatric and dementia-related behaviors."

Goulart, who was arrested in Newark on Aug. 30, was arraigned at the Fremont Hall of Justice on Wednesday, District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Teresa Drenick said. He was ordered to appear in court again next Wednesday, when he is scheduled to enter a plea.

He is being held on $500,000 bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, said Drenick.
