A teenage boy was arrested Wednesday morning after police said he admitted making up a story that he had received secondhand information about gunshots fired near Island High School on Third Street, which caused a brief lockdown at the campus and nearby Ruby Bridges Elementary School.
The boy reported the shots shortly after 8 a.m., saying he understood they were fired in the 1900 block of Third Street and that the suspect was last seen running toward Ruby Bridges on Jack London Avenue, police said.
The lockdown was lifted at the two schools after about an hour.
The name of the boy was not released because he is a minor. His age was not immediately available and it was unclear what prompted him to fabricate the story about the gunshots, police said.
