OAKLAND -- A police officer and a suspect both suffered minor injuries during a scuffle at a downtown Oakland BART station after the suspect allegedly failed to pay his fare Wednesday morning.
The melee began just after 8 a.m. after a BART police officer noticed a passenger who failed to pay for a train ticket at the 19th Street station in Oakland, said BART Lt. Mike Hayes.
When the officer attempted to stop the passenger for suspected fare evasion, a struggle broke out between the two, said Hayes.
During the fight, both the officer and suspect suffered minor injuries, which were treated at the scene, Hayes said.
Police then arrested the passenger on suspicion of fare evasion and resisting arrest. The suspect, who was not identified, was taken to jail and booked late Wednesday morning.
BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said the incident did not impact train service.
