OAKLAND -- A 24-year-old man suspected in the theft of a laptop from a Grand Avenue T-shirt design store Wednesday night was arrested Thursday morning in West Oakland.

The theft, caught on a video surveillance camera, happened about 7:46 p.m. Wednesday from the Pure 510 shop at 3224 Grand Ave., police said.

Video showed the man coming into the store and stealing the unattended laptop, police said. The store owner unsuccessfully tried to chase the man, seen fleeing in a car.

Officer Kevin Kaney spotted the car about 7:40 a.m. Thursday in the 3400 block of San Pablo Avenue, and pulled the driver over at a USA gas station.

The owner of the T-shirt store was brought to the scene and identified the man as the suspect, police said.

Police said the man, whose name has not been released, is also a suspect in an Aug. 27 theft in El Cerrito, at a Peet's Coffee and Tea shop in the 9800 block of San Pablo. The suspect grabbed a patron's laptop and fled in the same car, police said.

Police are investigating whether the suspect has been involved in other thefts besides the ones in El Cerrito and Oakland. They did not release his name but said he had addresses in Oakland and Berkeley.
